CANES 1 - NORTH YORK 2 (SO)

Canes fall in Shootout after putting out 46 shots

After Tuesday night's home ice win against Seguin, Newmarket advanced to second place overall in the CCHL with 65 points. They were now hosting the North York Rangers, Thursday night, January 28th who just recently grabbed onto a playoff spot in the Western Division. The Canes fought hard against the Rangers this evening, getting 46 shots on net, but ended up losing it in a shootout 2 - 1.

Both teams started out the first period at an equal level. Getting a feel for each other. Newmarket and North York each had their turn on the power play, getting quality chances but couldn't finish. Both goaltenders set the stage for a low scoring game with high quality play.  The game would enter the second period, scoreless.

A little under a minute into the second the Hurricanes went on the power play. Newmarket had several chances with the man advantage, playing most of the period with the extra man. They had all the momentum, getting many scoring opportunities, putting 19 shots on net in the second period, but couldn't bury one past the Rangers goalie who was playing real strong in net.  Sarj stood tall as well leaving the game scoreless at the end of two.

The Rangers got a lucky goal a little over five minutes into the third, going up by one late in the game. Newmarket kept up their shooting spree, taking shots from every angle, hoping for a lucky bounce. Finally, with less than ten minutes left, Joel Hanley scored from the point getting a much needed tying goal for his team, evening things up at one a piece. Sixty-five minutes of hockey wasn't enough, so things needed to be decided in a shootout.

Joel Hanley, Jarrod Connolly, Chad Sumsion, and Bowman Webster were the chosen shooters for the Hurricanes. All of them came close but fell short, unable to bury one. Jimmy Sarjeant played strong in net making three straight saves for his team, but couldn't grab the fourth shot, going top corner. Newmarket couldn't grab the "W" in tonight's home game, but they'll take the single point. The final score of the game was 2 - 1 North York in a Shootout. The final shots on net were 47 - 22 in favour of the Rangers. Newmarket now focuses on their home game on Sunday against the Wellington Dukes at 3:30pm.

Remember all Minor Hockey Players wearing their jersey get in to the game for free on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
