CANES 3 - COUGARS 1

Newmarket Sweeps Season Series

It was Fan Appreciation night at the Ray Twinney Complex and in honour of it the Hurricanes were giving away an Acer Computer, during the game. The Newmarket Hurricanes hosted the first place Burlington Cougars in a game that didn't mean too much in the standings, but meant a lot in the pride department. The final score of the match up was 3 - 1 Newmarket, giving the Hurricanes a 4 - 0 record vs Burlington this season.

The Hurricanes started out the evening on the power play two minutes into the game. Adam Davies took a wrist shot from the point, scoring a quick goal to give his team the early one goal lead. The game went to another level of physical play with both teams throwing hard hits whenever they got the chance. The Canes PK unit was put to the test, with Jimmy Sarjeant making some strong saves between the pipes. Immediately after the penalty kill, Burlington got themselves on the board, snapping a quick shot from the slot tying the game at one a piece. Things got uglier, with a Cougars player losing his temper dropping the gloves with Kevin Balas, resulting in a five minute power play for Newmarket that would carry into the second period.

Newmarket had a good cycle going throughout the power play but couldn't get much to the net, keeping the scored tied atone. Both Burlington and Newmarket were taking shots from every angle, coming close each time but couldn't bury it. The intensity level of the game increased, with Chad Sumsion putting on a great defensive display killing off a penalty and Nick Hovanessian impressing the crowd with a strong fight. The roughness continued with a scrap happening during every whistle, resulting in penalties for both clubs. The game would remain at one all heading into the third, after a penalty filled second period.

Jimmy Sarjeant started out the first five minutes of the third making some great saves in net. Morgan Bonner, Tyler Sikura and Bowman Webster were putting on a strong offensive display getting several shots on net, but couldn't get one past the Cougars goaltender. The Canes went on the power play, getting quality scoring chances, but couldnt capitalize. Newmarket seemed like they had all the momentum with Sikura, Webster and Bonner continuing to awe the Complex with their outstanding puck handling skills, coming close to putting one in the net. The Hurricanes took the lead, late in the third period with Bowman Webster taking the initial shot, and a big hit to make the play before Bonner tapped in the rebound to take a 2 - 1 lead.

The Cougars would pull their goaltender to get the extra attacker on the ice, hoping for a quick goal but Morgan Bonner sealed the win with his second of the night.

The final score of the game was 3 - 1 Newmarket. The  final shots on net were 34 - 26 in favour of the Hurricanes. Newmarket rounded up their regular season at home with a strong win. The Hurricanes lead the CCHL in attendance this season, welcoming over14,000 fans to the Ray Twinney Complex.  They play their last game of the regular season this weekend against the Streetsville Derby's. Playoffs start next Thursday February 11th at home.
