The Hurricanes finished the 2009-10 CCHL regular season on a losing note with a 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of the Streetsville Derbys at Westwood Arena Sunday night. With the loss, the Canes end the regular season in second place in the West Division with a 32-12-6 mark. They will now take on the seventh-place St. Michael's Buzzers in the Best-of-Seven CCHL West Quarter Finals, to start at the Ray Twinney Complex on Thursday, February 11 at 7:35pm.
Newmarket had a large edge in play in the opening twenty minutes against the Derbys, but only had a 1-1 deadlock to show for it. The Canes outshot Streetsville 15-3 with only Dalton Jay scoring late in the frame after an early Streetsvillle tally.
Streetsville had a 12-10 shot edge in the mmiddle frame, the Canes were 10-5 to the good in the third but neither team could collect a second goal...
That is until 2:33 of the extra frame when the Derbys banged home a rebound past Canes netminder Matt Wintjes. The win was a huge one for the Derbys as they overtook the Toronto Jr. Canadiens for fifth place in the CCHL west.
