On Thursday October 9th, the Newmarket Hurricanes were hosting the Cobourg Cougars at the Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket. This was Newmarket's best game of the season, with key players putting up a lot of points, and the return of Jim Campbell to the Canes blue line.
The Canes came into this game on a four game losing streak and needed to get some revenge against Cobourg, after getting beat 7 - 3 in Cobourg on Monday night. Newmarket went on the powerplay early in the 1st period when Cobourg went two-men down and it was Newmarket's chance to jump out to a early lead in the game. Newmarket Hurricanes captain Thomas Patterson gave the Canes the early 1-0 lead on the powerplay. Over a minute later, Glen McCarron put one in from the point, getting his 6th of the season and giving Newmarket a two goal lead. Jim Campbell got an assist on McCarron's goal, on his first game back from his injury. With two minutes left in the 1st, Justin Hogan scored to give Newmarket a three goal lead going into the second.
The Canes continued the strong play right into the second. Newmarket was giving huge open ice hits to any Cobourg player with their head down. The Hurricanes were playing like they really wanted this win, and were capitalizing on a lot of chances. Chad Sumsion would put up points again, getting his 11th goal of the season and giving the Canes a 4 goal lead. Glen McCarron was a huge factor on the powerplay setting up his teammates for chances, he would get another assist on the powerplay when he set up Justin Hogan for his second of the night. The Canes got into some penalty trouble, but that didn't stop them as Andrew Buck stole the puck off a Cougar defender and slid it five hole, putting his team up by 6.
The Cobourg Cougars would start the third with a powerplay. They would break Jimmy Sarjeants' chance for a shutout, scoring and cutting the lead to 5. Jonathan Pietramala put up a strong fight against the Cougars captain gaining a hard earned decision. The Canes added to their lead when PJ Buys would get his first goal as a Newmarket Hurricane, giving Newmarket a huge 7-1 lead. The Hurricanes weren't done yet, with only a minute left in the third, Joe Anstett set up Justin Hogan for a hatrick, that would give Newmarket an 8-1 victory.
The Newmarket Hurricanes are back on the winning side, playing an amazing game and getting a huge win at home. Jimmy Sarjeant played well in net, making key saves when the Canes needed it most. Glen McCarron was Boston Pizza's player of the game getting 1 goal and 3 assists. Newmarket will look to win another home game, when they play this Thanksgiving Sunday at 3:30pm against the Stouffville Spirit, at the Ray Twinney Complex.
